The new Common Core State Standards can be very confusing and difficult to understand.  Let's start with some background information.  Connecticut is one of 46 states that has chosen to implement the Common Core State Standards.  The CCSS have allowed states to collaborate in the development of a consistent set of standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics and, in doing so, will provide continuity across the United States for students and teachers.  The CCSS require Connecticut students to master the same skill set as students in 45 other states for each grade level.  While the outcome is the same, there is flexibility in the process used to deliver the information to the students.  This allows teachers to tailor lessons to the needs of their individual students.
For a more in depth explanation visit the Common Core's website, www.corestandards.org.  Additional information is provided through a summary of the standards as presented by the National PTA.
