The Key Points in the Standards

The key points in the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, according to www.corestandards.org, are that the standards "establish a staircase of increasing complexity" of what students are required to be able to do in order to be college and career ready.  The standards stress building knowledge through a wide variety of text types that are both fictional and informational.  Students are expected to write both logical arguements with relevent evidence as well as research papers.  Speaking a listening focus on group, one-on-one, and small group discussions and students are expected to grow their vocabularies through a mix of conversations, direct instruction, and reading.  Media and technology are expected to be incorporated throughout the standards.  Click here to read the ELA key points in detail.

The key points in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics are that the standards "provide a students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals" as stated by www.corestandards.org.  The standards are expected to help students to build upon what they have learned in the previous grade and apply it to more demanding math concepts and procedures.
