English Language Arts

The English Language Arts & Literacy Common Core State Standards were developed to ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school.  The CCSS are a result of decades-long work that resulted in standards that drew on several international models as well as research and input from state departments of education, scholars, educators, professional organizations, policy makers, parents, and students.
As specified by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Govenors Association (NGA) the literacy standards are:
1. research and evidence based,
2. aligned with college and work expectations,
3. rigorous, and
4. internationally benchmarked.

A crosswalk is available from the Connecticut State Department of Education which explains the correlation between the Common Core and Connecticut standards.   The ELA crosswalks are organized by grade level and available midway down the page.

The standards are intended to be a living work and as new research and evidence becomes available, the standards will be revised.  More infomation regarding the NGA's work on the Common Core State Standards is available at their website and this NGA publication.
